Best Email Marketing Platforms for Creators: What You'll Really Pay at 1,000 and 5,000 Subscribers
Five creator-friendly email tools compared by the bill at your list size, not the "starting at" price on the pricing page.
Heads-up: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you sign up through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't decide our picks. Here's how we review.
Most email tools look cheap on the pricing page. Then your list grows, and the bill grows with it.
The best email marketing platform for creators at 300 subscribers can be one of the priciest at 5,000. Kit costs $0 at 5,000 subscribers if you only send newsletters, and $89 a month once you need an automated welcome sequence. beehiiv's headline price is a yearly-billing figure. GetResponse's free plan isn't even shown on its main pricing page.
So this guide skips "starting at" prices. We compare five creator-friendly tools by what you'll really pay at 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 subscribers on monthly billing, and we tell you who should skip each one.

What the table tells you
- Systeme.io is the cheapest at every size, because email comes bundled in a low-cost all-in-one plan.
- Among dedicated email tools, MailerLite and GetResponse Starter trade places. MailerLite is $5 cheaper at 5,000 ($49 vs $54). GetResponse is $10 cheaper at 10,000 ($79 vs $89), but Starter includes only one custom automation workflow.
- Kit and beehiiv both reach $139 at 10,000, but Kit's free plan keeps you at $0 all the way there if broadcasts are enough.
What year one costs at 5,000 subscribers
Monthly price × 12, for the cheapest plan with automated sequences:
- Systeme.io Startup: $17 × 12 = $204
- MailerLite Comfort: $49 × 12 = $588
- GetResponse Starter: $54 × 12 = $648
- Kit Creator: $89 × 12 = $1,068
- beehiiv Lite: $109 × 12 = $1,308
That's a $1,104 gap per year for the same 5,000 people.

Yearly billing narrows it a little. Kit Creator at 5,000 is $890 a year ($178 saved), and beehiiv Lite is $95/mo billed yearly ($1,140, or $168 saved). GetResponse takes 18% off, MailerLite 10%, and Systeme.io gives two months free ($170 a year for Startup). We'd still pay monthly until you're sure a tool fits.
Drag the slider to your list size, or the size you expect in a year, and say whether you need an automated welcome sequence. You'll see the cheapest plan on each platform and what happens to the bill if your list doubles. Comparing course platforms too? Try our real cost calculator.
How we compared (and why this isn't a vendor's list)
Many of the pages that rank for this topic are published by an email company that puts its own tool first. We don't sell an email tool. Some links here are affiliate links, and how we review explains how we keep that away from the picks.
This is a research-based comparison. We read each vendor's pricing page, plan data and help docs, and we don't claim months of hands-on testing. We judged all five on the same points:
- Price at 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 subscribers, monthly billing
- What the free plan really covers, including the subscriber cap and whether it can send a sequence
- When automations unlock, because a welcome sequence is the first thing most creators need
- Selling and fees, for products and paid subscriptions
- Who should skip it

Skip it if: you need automated sequences on a small budget. Creator is $89/mo at 5,000, and MailerLite Comfort is $49.
Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is built around creators who sell. Its strength is sorting subscribers by what they do, then sending each group the right email.
The free plan is big. Kit's pricing page lists it as "Free—up to 10,000 subscribers", with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts, tagging and segmentation, and selling digital products and subscriptions. What it leaves out is the part that sells on autopilot: no email sequences and no visual automations.
Creator unlocks the automation. It adds "Unlimited Visual Automations" and "Unlimited email sequences", plus branding removal, A/B subject lines and RSS campaigns. Prices on monthly billing run $39 at 1,000, $89 at 5,000 and $139 at 10,000. Kit also lists free migrations from another platform.
Why it suits product sellers: say someone grabs your free checklist. Kit can tag them, run a five-email welcome sequence and pitch your course only to people who clicked the right links. That buyer-versus-browser logic is what launches run on.

Systeme.io: cheapest all-in-one
Systeme.io
Best for: Email, funnels and a course for $0–$17Free up to 2,000 contacts · Startup $17/mo
- Free plan
- 2,000 contacts, 1 workflow
- At 5,000 subs
- $17/mo Startup
- At 10,000 subs
- $47/mo Webinar
- Transaction fees
- None from Systeme.io
Skip it if: you're newsletter-first, or you already have a site and course host and only need email.
Systeme.io isn't only an email tool. It bundles email, sales funnels, a checkout, courses and a website in one account, and every plan sends unlimited emails ("Send unlimited emails to all of your contacts").
Plans: Free covers 2,000 contacts. Startup is $17/mo for 5,000, Webinar is $47/mo for 10,000, and Unlimited is $97/mo. Systeme.io says there are "No transaction fees"; Stripe or PayPal still charge their own.
Be honest about the free plan. It caps you at 500 students, 1 tag, 1 automation rule and 1 workflow. That's fine for testing, but too limited for a real email funnel. Startup raises that to 10 tags, 10 automation rules and 5 workflows, which is why our table counts $17 as its real price for a sequence. Startup allows 10 funnels and 5 courses; Webinar allows 50 funnels and 20 courses (Systeme.io's own plan data; the pricing FAQ's "unlimited" wording overstates this).

MailerLite: cheapest automations in a dedicated email tool

- $49/mo Comfort
- At 10,000 subs
- $89/mo Comfort

- 10× your tier on Comfort
Skip it if: you want to stay free past a few hundred subscribers. Kit's free plan covers 40 times more.
MailerLite doesn't try to be a newsletter network or a business suite. It's a clean email tool with low paid prices.
The free plan is small. It covers up to 250 subscribers, 2 user seats and 2,500 emails a month, with campaigns, 3 automations, a website, a landing page and signup forms. Good for learning, but you'll outgrow it fast.
The paid plans are the reason to pick it.
- Comfort is $19 at 1,000, $49 at 5,000 and $89 at 10,000. You can send "10× the ceiling of your subscriber tier each month", so 10,000 emails on the 1,000 tier.
- Power is $39, $69 and $129 at the same sizes, and MailerLite says it "includes unlimited monthly emails, subject to our fair use policy."
Annual billing takes 10% off.
Who should skip it: anyone set on $0, and anyone who emails a big list daily, since Comfort's send cap can push you to Power.

beehiiv: best when the newsletter is the product

- Revenue take

- Lite (10) and up
Skip it if: you sell courses with launch sequences, or your budget is tight past 2,500 subscribers.
beehiiv is built for people whose newsletter is the business, not just a marketing channel. It markets itself on growth and monetization tools, such as its recommendation network and ad network.
Read the price carefully. The pricing page loads with yearly billing selected, so the headline is $49. Lite starts at $59/mo billed monthly ($49/mo billed yearly) for up to 1,000 subscribers. On monthly billing it's $109 at 5,000 and $139 at 10,000.
Free gets you far, but not to a sequence. The Free plan covers "Up to 2,500" subscribers and includes a single welcome email. A multi-step welcome sequence needs automations, which start on Lite ("Live custom automations: 10").
The money side is strong. beehiiv says it "takes 0% of your paid subscription and digital product revenue", leaving Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30. Paid subscriptions start on Lite. Removing beehiiv branding needs Pro ($109/mo at 1,000; $199 at 5,000).

- At 5,000 subs
- $54 Starter · $109 Creator

Skip it if: you're a pure newsletter writer, or a beginner who doesn't run webinars.
GetResponse is the most "marketing department" tool here. It earns its place if you sell through webinars.
- Starter ($19 at 1,000, $54 at 5,000) includes a welcome email series and 1 custom automation workflow.
- Marketer ($59, $95) unlocks unlimited automation workflows.
- Creator ($69, $109) adds webinars, a website builder and a course creator. Student allowance scales with your tier: 500 students at 1,000 contacts, 2,000 at 5,000.
The free plan isn't on the main pricing page, which only shows a 14-day trial. GetResponse still has a free-forever plan (500 contacts, 2,500 emails/mo, no live automations): you can only save drafts of automations.

Free plans keep shrinking: how to protect yourself
Free tiers and paid prices change, sometimes with little warning. You can't control that, but you can make a change cheap to survive.

- Price your list at 2–3× today's size. That's where you'll be in a year if things go well. Use the calculator above, which shows the "if your list doubles" price for each tool.
- Check which billing the headline uses. beehiiv's page loads on yearly billing. GetResponse's free plan lives on a separate page. Compare monthly to monthly.
- Export your subscriber list every month or so. A CSV on your own drive means a price hike is an annoyance, not a hostage situation.
- Stay on monthly billing until a tool fits. The 10–20% yearly discount is worth less than the freedom to leave.
- Keep your sequence copy in a doc outside the tool. Moving the list is quick. Rebuilding emails, tags and forms is the real work.
- Send from your own domain. Systeme.io already blocks Gmail senders, and a domain address moves with you.
- Know what happens at the limit. Systeme.io warns you for 3 days, then restricts the account (opt-ins, payments and campaigns stop) until you upgrade or trim. On cancellation, contacts above 2,000 are archived, not deleted.
- Use free migrations. Kit lists free migrations. Systeme.io lists a free migration service on its Unlimited plan.
New to all of this? Our step-by-step guide on how to start an email list shows which free plans can send a welcome sequence.
Also considered: Mailchimp, Flodesk and Substack
Mailchimp. The best-known name. Its pricing page shows a free plan capped at 250 contacts and 500 sends a month (250 a day), and lists its automation flows on the higher Standard and Premium plans. That's a tight free tier for a creator list, so it missed our five.
Flodesk. Known for design-led email templates. If you remember it as a flat-price option, check again: its current pricing page shows a Free plan and paid plans priced by subscriber count. Price your exact tier on its page before you compare.
Substack. Free to publish, and Substack says "Writers keep 90% of their revenue minus credit card fees." At $1,000 a month in paid subscriptions, that's $100 to Substack. beehiiv Lite at 1,000 subscribers is a flat $59 with a 0% take (card fees apply on both). Substack is a publishing network, not a sales-funnel tool, so it suits writers more than product sellers.
How to choose the best email marketing platform for creators
Answer a few quick questions about what you sell, your budget and your list size, and the quiz points you to a match.
If you'd rather skim, start from what you sell:
- Courses, coaching or digital products: Kit. Use Free while you grow, then Creator when you need launch sequences.
- Everything in one account for $0–$17: Systeme.io.
- Automations for the lowest price in a pure email tool: MailerLite Comfort.
- The newsletter is the product: beehiiv. Webinar-driven sales: GetResponse Creator.
FAQ
What is the best free email marketing platform for creators?
It depends on what you need for free. Kit's free plan covers the most subscribers (up to 10,000) for broadcasts, forms and tagging. Systeme.io's covers 2,000 contacts and adds funnels and a course. beehiiv's covers 2,500 subscribers with one welcome email. MailerLite's stops at 250 subscribers and GetResponse's at 500.
Which email platform is cheapest for a large list?
At 10,000 subscribers on monthly billing: Systeme.io Webinar is $47, GetResponse Starter is $79, MailerLite Comfort is $89, and Kit Creator and beehiiv Lite are both $139. Kit's free plan also reaches 10,000 if you only need broadcasts.
Is Kit better than beehiiv?
They suit different creators. Kit fits product sellers who rely on tags and sequences, and it's cheaper with automations at 1,000 ($39 vs $59). beehiiv fits writers whose newsletter is the business, with a 0% take on paid subscriptions. Both have free plans, so you can try each.
Do I need automations when I'm just starting?
Not on day one, but soon. A short welcome sequence is usually the first automation that pays off, because it greets every new subscriber while they're most interested. Kit Free and beehiiv Free can't run one; MailerLite Free and Systeme.io Free can, within tight limits.
Will my emails land in spam?
No tool can promise the inbox. The basics are in your hands: send from your own domain and authenticate it in your email tool's settings, only add people who opted in, and remove addresses that bounce or haven't opened in months.
Can I switch email platforms later?
Yes. Every platform here lets you export your list, and Kit lists free migrations. The real effort is rebuilding forms, tags and sequences, so keep copies of your emails outside the tool and price your future list size before you commit.
Bottom line
Pick the tool that matches what you sell, then check its price at two or three times your current list. For most product-selling creators, Kit's free plan is the lowest-risk start; if every dollar counts, Systeme.io costs $17 a month at 5,000. Upgrade only when a missing feature costs you sales.
